In 2004, the Community Partnership launched the Cambridge Freight Yard Revitalization Project, a community initiative to purchase, preserve and rehabilitate a two-acre intact historic rural freight yard in the commercial heart of the Village of Cambridge, Washington County. Through a dynamic public-private partnership, seven (previously vacant, distressed) historic structures were rehabilitated, a quaint park created, and important infrastructure needs (e.g., installation of a decentralized wastewater treatment system and 30 car municipal parking lot) were addressed within. The result of the project has been not only preservation of a unique historic rural freight yard but expanded spaces for commercial pursuits, residency and the arts center Hubbard Hall—and more vibrant economy. The Community Partnership leveraged about $2.5 million in private donations and grants for the revitalization initiative from an array of sources including NYSERDA, NYSDOT/FHWA, NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets, NYS Office of Community Renewal (NYMS) and (RESTORE NY).
